Diabetes is the inability of the body to process the glucose present in the blood. Usually, with proper care and control over one’s diet, diabetes can be kept in check easily and prevented from turning into anything serious or life threatening. For timely diabetes treatment, symptoms of diabetes should be detected at an early stage. These diabetes symptoms can be easily detected in case of type 1 diabetes since they are more severe as compared to type 2. Further, type 1 diabetes are usually diagnosed in childhood or early adulthood itself. However, type 2 diabetes symptoms are much more subtle, and the patients need to be more diligent to notice them.
3 T’s and 1 V of Diabetes
Most of the diabetes symptoms are common to both types since in both the types, the body is faced with the same problem of higher blood sugar levels. A simple way to remember the major symptoms of diabetes is that of the 3 T’s and 1 V.
Toilet (Frequent Urination) - The average frequency of urination for a healthy human varies from four to seven times in a span of 24 hours. In the case of diabetes, this number shoots up distinctively. Why? This is because your kidneys are unable to reabsorb the glucose. Hence, the body tries to dispose this extra glucose by the means at its disposal - more urine.
Thirsty (Dehydration) - Since the body is making more urine to rid itself of the extra glucose, your body’s water level is also being affected. Therefore, a parched throat, dry skin and a feeling of thirst go hand in hand with diabetes.
Tired (Fatigue and Hunger) - You might remember this from your own schooling years or from helping your young ones revise during their examinations that our body has an energy currency called adenosine triphosphate or ATP. Glucose is essential for the body to make this ATP. Now, with a lack of insulin or reduction in its effectiveness, the body can no longer harness glucose to produce ATP. As a result, patients tend to stay tired and hungry.
Vision (Blurry and Unclear) - Fluctuation in bodily fluids results in the eye lenses swelling up. This causes a change in their shape and consequently, loss of the eye’s ability to focus.
Now, these four diabetes symptoms are common to both the primary types of diabetes. In addition, each type has a few symptoms specific to itself. We will talk about these unique telltale signals of diabetes in the next section.
Unique Type 1 Diabetes Symptoms
There is one symptom that is particular to type 1 diabetes, and helps differentiate between the two kinds. It is :-
Unexpected Weight Loss - When the body is unable to derive energy from food, it starts burning muscle and fat for its everyday functioning. The result is an unplanned loss in weight.
Unique Type 2 Diabetes Symptoms
Now, coming to type 2 diabetes, we have about four different symptoms that are characteristic of this type:-
Thrush (Yeast Infections) - Yeast feast on glucose, and the excess glucose in a patient’s body draws yeast like Indians to a buffet. This yeast gives rise to infections in and around moist, warm areas like between fingers, toes and sex organs.
Delayed healing of sores and cuts - The higher blood glucose levels result in narrowed blood vessels, hindering the flow of oxygen and efficiency of white blood cells. It leads to diabetic neuropathy, a condition in which there is a loss of sensation and feeling. All this contributes to slowing down of the healing process.
Tingling or numbness in feet or legs - Another side effect of diabetic neuropathy, this results in a tingling or numbness in the feet or legs. Approximately, 60-70% of diabetes patients are afflicted with diabetic neuropathy. Though it can present itself in patients at any time, usually patients who have been suffering from diabetes for a longer time period are more susceptible to this nerve disease.
If you are suffering from any combination of the above symptoms, it is time to pick up that phone and set up an appointment with the family doctor.
